Fate and removal of microplastics in unplanted lab-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands

چکیده
Many studies have reported conventional wastewater treatment plants as one of the main sources microplastics (MPs). However, constructed wetlands (CWs) a nature-based system received little attention. This study investigated influence biofilm, media type and earthworms on fate removal MPs in short-term (45d) experiment with unplanted lab-scale vertical flow CWs (VFCWs). In sand-filled VFCWs, were retained first 10 cm, efficiency was 100%, regardless presence biofilm. When gravel used filling material, stable at 96%, but distributed throughout 80 cm high VFCWs. earthworms, maximum depth that reached within VFCWs increased from to 15 cm. Furthermore, concentration 3–6 6–10 2 fold respectively compared same without earthworms. Although no detected sand deep layers (15–80 cm), transport top bottom by found, few effluent, leading 99.8%. indicated both higher grain size small effect distribution considerably. Longer-term full-scale are advised perform under more practical factors.

Recirculating Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands
In parts of the United States where soils are very permeable, conventional septic tank and absorption field systems are considered the largest contributor to waterborne disease and pollution of water bodies. However, an economical, recirculating vertical flow (RVF) constructed wetland, used as a pretreatment system, can significantly improve the performance of conventional onsite wastewater tre...

Enhancement of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal in Pilot-Scale Vertical Subsurface Flow-Constructed Wetlands Using Polypropylene Pellets
Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus is known to be somewhat problematic in vertical subsurface flow (VSSF)constructed wetlands. In this pilot-scale study, two planted (Typha latifolia L. [cattail]) VSSF-constructed wetlands A (with polypropylene pellets) and B (without polypropylene pellets) and one unplanted control C (without polypropylene pellets) were designed to test the contribution of pol...
متن کاملWhich Hydraulic Model to Use in Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands?
Modeling water flow in a VFCW is a prerequisite to model wastewater treatment using process based filtering models. As for soils, when the vertical structure varies in different material types, it has a significant impact on water flow passing through it. The heterogeneous filtering material is composed of a mix of mineral porous material, and organic matter which makes its hydraulic characteri...
متن کاملTreatment Efficiencies of the Vertical Flow Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetlands for Domestic Wastewater Treatment
To foster the practical development of the constructed wetlands used for water quality enhancement in Turkey, 2 vertical subsurface flow pilot-scale constructed wetlands were implemented on the METU campus, Ankara, Turkey. Both of the wetlands were planted with Phragmites australis and operated identically at a flowrate of 3 m3.d−1 and a hydraulic loading rate (HLR) of 0.100 m.d−1, intermittent...
